Lowhouses Anna - An exceptional mare in Breeding and Showing

Previous

Lowhouses Anna and colt foal

Born in 1986, the first foal out of Raygill Gemma (sire Ashwood Black Prince), Lowhouses Anna has produced her 19th foal for Richie and Freda Longstaff in Teesdale, Co. Durham. Ten colt foals and three filly foals by Lummas Prince II and from 2004 five filly foals and this year's colt by Slateyford Diamond. Not a bad record!

Anna has been shown in hand many times, her first success winning the Overall Foal Cup at the Annual Summer Breed Show in 1986. Here are some highlights of her impressive record:

1987 The Yearling Cup at the Summer Breed Show, first in her class at Ravonstonedale Show, 2nd at Brough Show, 3rd at Wolsingham Show
1988 1st in the 2 year old Filly Class at the Summer Breed Show, Champion at Bowes Show, 2nd at Brough and Egglestone Shows, 3rd at Darlington and Heighington Shows
1989 3rd in the Junior Geld Mare Class at the Spring Breed Show, 2nd at Reeth, Wolsingham, Bowes and Egglestone Shows, 3rd at Darlington
1990 1st in the Brood Mare with Foal at Foot at the Spring Breed Show, beating her mother who was second, won classes and was the overall champion at Darlington, Reeth, Wolsingham and Bowes Shows and 1st at Eggleston
1991 1st in her class at Reeth and overall champion
1992 2nd in the Brood Mare Class at the Spring Breed Show, champion at Reeth, 2nd at Bowes and 3rd at Egglestone (her mother taking the chamionship)
1994 Champion at Brough and Stanhope Shows, 1st in her class at Darlington and Wolsingham
1995 3rd at the Spring Breed Show
1996 3rd in the Brood Mare Class at the Summer Breed Show and her colt foal, Lowhouses jason won the Foal Cup. Caroline Eccles was 1st in the Young Handlers Class showing Anna. Caroline and Anna did this again in 1997. Also, Anna was 2nd at Brough, Reeth and Wolsingham Shows
1997 1st in her class at Wolsingham Show and reserve overall champion, 2nd at Stanhope Show
1998 3rd at Egglestone Show
1999 1st in her class at the Great Yorkshire Show, 1st and reserve champion at Brough, 1st and champion at Wolsingham, 1st at Eggleston
2000 2nd at the Great Yorkshire Show, 1st at the Summer Breed Show, champion at Brough

Foot and Mouth ruled out 2001 and Anna had a rest from showing in 2002 and 2003

2004 4th at the Summer Breed Show, 1st in the Veteran class and received the cup for the oldest brood mare. A fitting time for her to retire from the show ring at the age of 18

Anna's progeny are far and wide and have also had many successes in the show ring. See her progeny page.

Not a bad record for a brood mare. You could not wish for a quieter pony to deal with and hopefully she will be with us for some time yet.

Anna's full sister, 12 year old Lowhouses Rebecca, has also won many prizes in the show ring and last year was the overall reserve champion and best brood mare at the Summer Breed Show at Barnard Castle.
