This was Bobby in about 1954 in Shipley, West Yorkshire.
Mr Stilgoe was a general “Carrier” and worked all over Shipley and the surrounding area.
In this picture he would have been aged 79.
Bobby liked nothing better than a choc-ice or sometimes
a bit of a Fry's Cream Bar as an extra special treat.
Again about 1954.
I was called Julia Spalding back then.
I was 12 at the time and had had a few riding lessons on the beach at Filey
which were useless when riding a pony aged 20 who had never been broken for riding.
I had made the saddle from a cushion and old black-out material
but the leather strap I tried as a girth was too short.
I eventually bought a saddle with a broken tree and used it for years
- second-hand saddles were in short supply in Shipley at that time!
